Inside Moonshine | ENDEVR Documentary

Moonshine, often romanticized as a simple country pleasure, has a darker side. It's dangerous to produce, sometimes deadly to consume, and illegal. In the Blue Ridge Mountains, moonshining is more than a tradition—it's a way of life deeply intertwined with local culture and history. Despite its illicit nature, many see it as a source of Southern pride and heritage.

To combat illegal moonshine, special task forces like Virginia's Alcoholic Beverage Control unit hunt moonshiners using covert operations. Moonshiners employ tactics like camouflaging their stills to evade detection.

Some families have transitioned to legal distilling, like Chuck Miller's family, who now produce Virginia Lightning. Legal moonshine is regulated and taxed, made using traditional recipes.

The history of moonshine is closely linked to stock car racing. During Prohibition, moonshine haulers modified cars for speed to outrun law enforcement, leading to the birth of NASCAR. Junior Johnson, a legendary moonshine hauler, became a NASCAR star.

Moonshine remains a part of American folklore and culture. Events like the Moonshiners Jamboree celebrate this heritage. Museums and exhibitions preserve the history and art of moonshining.
