Amina was eight years old when she was circumcised. At some point she fled her homeland of Somalia. Today she is 41, has six children and has lived in Germany for five years. She still suffers from the consequences of genital cutting, which, according to the UN, affects around 200 million women. Their number is also increasing in Germany. Many authorities, teachers, social workers and doctors are overwhelmed. Amina's external genitalia was restored through an operation in Germany. Since then, she has been campaigning against genital mutilation and wants to help other women from her Somali community. Not an easy thing, as here too some families cling to the archaic tradition and talking about it means breaking a taboo. What can it do?
