In 1977, the Bee Gees Track ‘Night Fever. from the film ‘Saturday Night Fever’ was the first commercial 'pop' release to feature a drum loop comprised of recorded acoustic drums. It became about by necessity and turned into a practice that has completely taken over music production over the past 40 years.

Tape loops had been used for many years including drum loops. Instances include The Beatles demo of 'Tomorrow Never Knows' in 1966 and Steely Dan's 'Showbiz Kids' but the practice didn't really become commonplace in pop music until the late 70's and kicking it all off was the Bee Gees track 'Night Fever'.

This is the story of how it happened and its legacy on music production since.
