Established in 1828, the town derived its name from DeWitt Clinton, the governor of New York, renowned for his pivotal role in the creation of the Erie Canal. Throughout the 19th century, Port Clinton experienced modest population growth, tallying 16 hundred inhabitants in 1880 and over 2 thousand by 1890. By 1886, the town boasted three newspaper offices, four churches, and a singular bank. A variety of manufacturing enterprises, the most prominent being Couche and Company, a sawmill employing ten workers. The majority of businesses in Port Clinton catered to the needs of farmers in the surrounding countryside.
