THE DOWNSLOPE CHIP SHOT on the 17th of the 1982 U.S. Open | Legend Tom Watson
two pars and you tie a par and a birdie you win a par and a bogey you lose a two iron we're told 210 yards again this down and he's over with the Deep Stu going to be tough to hold it close from there isn't it Dave Jim it looks from here again we can just see the ball very clearly there but he just doesn't have any green he's downhill but he's got a wonderful touch he's a good up and down player Well Jack we're going to wait here with you and you're on the edge of your fifth open it's a pleasure to be in your time I'll tell you thank you Jack this is a shot of his he he generally plays very well of course the conditions now that he has to play the shot test anyone so we'll just have to see looks looks good do you believe it do you believe what can you say Tom Watson pitching into the hole for a birdie has taken the lead in the US Open the situation was this the ball was on the down slope I was hitting the ball to a Downs slope on the green and how do you hit the ball high and soft from a Downs slope to Green that sloping away from you here's how you do it put the ball down here the key on the down slope is to align your body with the slope most people the wrong way to do it is to lean back and keep your body perpendicular to gravity what you want to do is make your body tilt this way and to do that You' got to have your weight on the inside of your left foot your left knee kicked in and you got to widen your stance and by tilting this way your left shoulder goes down your right shoulder goes up from that position that's a Chang in position your body you'll be able to swing the club up hit the ball with the proper part of the arc and the ball will come up out of the grass I open the face up a little bit the face is not square like this the face is open about 30° about like this and as I do this watch it again I don't go in here like this I go in here with a wider stance the weight's on the inside of my left foot open the face about 30° left shoulder low right shoulder High
