RATS - by M.R.James

 Published On Apr 25, 2024

“Rats” is a chilling ghost story set near the Suffolk coast in England. The narrative revolves around Mr Thomson, a young man who is the sole guest at a small seaside inn. One sunny afternoon, driven by curiosity, Thomson explores the inn’s other bedrooms. He discovers that one room is locked, but he manages to open it using a key from another room. Inside, he finds nothing but a bed with a human form beneath the blankets, its head covered as though it were a corpse. However, the shape moves, and despite Thomson’s attempts, he hears no breathing. Disturbed by the experience, he locks the room and hears unsettling footsteps. Thomson debates leaving the inn but ultimately decides to stay, rationalising that the innkeepers live with the mysterious occupant without fear. The story leaves readers with unease, pondering the entity's nature beneath the bedclothes.

This tale is a classic example of James’ ability to evoke horror through suggestion and atmosphere rather than explicit description.

Story narrated by Chris Halton.
