A naturalization ceremony occurs when foreign-born immigrants are granted U.S. citizenship after he or she fulfills the requirements established by Congress to become a citizen. During the ceremony, immigrants recite an Oath of Allegiance to the United States, and receive their legal documents denoting their new status as American citizens. This year there is expected to be 50 petitioners to become U.S. citizens at City Hall.

“The United States is a nation of immigrants, coming from all corners of the world to weave the story of America,” said Councilmember Emmanuel V. Remy. “These new American citizens and their families will help us tell our story here in Columbus and Central Ohio.”

The ceremony will be presided over by Chief Judge Algenon L. Marbley of the Southern District of Ohio and feature remarks from guest speaker, Nadia Kasvin, Co-Founder and Executive Director of US Together.

“Citizenship is one of the most significant privileges that we can bestow upon persons born abroad who have come to live in this country. Each new citizen brings unique life experiences and perspectives that enhance the diversity and cultural richness of our democracy,” said Chief Judge Algenon L. Marbley. “The Court is excited to partner with Columbus City Council to welcome our newest citizens during Immigrant Heritage Month.”
