Why can I not use the same wheel nuts from my aluminum wheels to my winter steel wheels?

Wheel nuts are made to fit the specific design of the wheel, meaning that the same wheel nuts may not fit different wheels. Aluminum wheels and steel wheels have different mounting hole designs and patterns, so the wheel nuts used on aluminum wheels will not fit on steel wheels.
