This is the first time I have ever held anything from WW2 and to have chance to restore a Brodie Helmet was pretty exciting. While carrying out the work on this WW2 Helmet Restoration I couldn’t help but wonder who the initials belonged to and what he and the helmet went through during those dark times.
When I came across the British Army Helmet it was looking very worn, there were a few dents in it along with some very deep pock marks from the rust. I had initially intended not to use filler and try to sand it down but after inspecting it I didn’t think the metal would take it. The process of de rusting, Sanding,Filling and Painting have taken me two weeks to do and about 22hours in total. There are parts of the process which i did not include, The lettering that you see was carried out by my local sign company but originally I had printed some letters along with a poppy and a soldier silouhette which I cut out by hand. The helmet started red then black before the green which allowed me to then peel off each layer of the image but sadly this didn’t go to plan so I settled for this finish instead.

I decided not to try to restore the strap as I felt it was more important to retain some of the history especially since it had someones intials on it. I would have reused the liner threaded holdng pin if it had been a little longer but I will keep all three together as package.

This is a hobby for me which I enjoy doing in my spare time. I am not a professional restorer, Painter or fabricator and I know some of my techniques may not be upto the standards of some professionals on here. Having said that if you think you know a better way to complete these works I would be happy to listen,
I will learn from each project to bring you not only a nicer finished piece but also a cleaner piece of editing. Please leave your comments below and ill do my best to reply to them.

Kind Regards Unique Restorations
