Part 2 of a 5 part series commemorating Dr. Brenda Milner's 103rd birthday on July 15th, 2021.

This excerpt, which features Dr. Brenda Milner, a founder of modern Neuropsychology and Distinguished Professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, McGill University, was taken from an in-depth interview by Professor Michael Bliss, Emeritus Professor of History of Medicine at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Milner’s research on Memory is of historic significance and will be of interest to students, budding scientists, scholars of medical history, media, and the general public.

In this clip, we learn about the beginnings of Dr. Milner’s career in Canada at the Montreal Neurological Institute and her experience as a woman. She first came to Canada in 1945 with her new husband and fellow scientist Peter Milner. Determined not to be a kept woman, she found employment lecturing at the fledgling University of Montreal. Later, she worked with Dr. Wilder Penfield and his colleges at the Montreal Neurological Institute, launching her career.

Produced as part of the Video History of Medicine in Canada program, conducted by the Friends of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Filmed at McGill University on May 13th, 2013.
