The theory suggests that the universe began with an infinitely hot and dense single point that inflated and stretched over the course of billions of years to the still-expanding cosmos that we know today. At its initial stage, the expansion occurred at an incredibly fast rate which is why it appears to be isotropic and homogeneous on large scales.
