Like the rest of the country, seniors are staying at home to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of stressing over what you can’t do, why don’t you take this opportunity to learn a new skill…or master an old one with a free online #class?

Even before the coronavirus struck, instruction has been moving online. No matter where your interests lie, you can probably find an online #class on the subject.
And even though you may not earn credits toward a degree, many of the courses available are college-caliber… and some are even Ivy League!
What do you need to move to the head of the class? Just a computer, tablet, or smartphone.
Check out Skillshare, an online learning community with thousands of classes for creative and curious people on its website and apps. Topics include illustration, design, photography, video, and more.
Courses like “Drawing as Self-Discovery” not only help you learn a discipline, but also learn about yourself.
But it’s not all arts. Type in Math and you’ll see a wide variety of mathematics courses from basic math to trigonometry to applied calculus. Clicking on a course you’re interested in gives you a preview of the class.
You can read about the course to see if it fits your needs, learn about the instructor, see how many people are watching it currently, see how many parts it is, and how many hours it will take to complete.
If that’s too long a time commitment for you, here’s a neat feature: you can speed up parts of the course you know to get to the parts you need. Not sure you want to apply that to applied calculus, though!
Only some of Skillshare’s classes are free. But the site is currently offering two months of premium membership for free that allow you to take any of their offerings.
How many free courses can you finish in two months? Especially when you can speed them up!
Millions of people have enrolled in Coursera, another online education site that even offers courses from Yale, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and the University of Michigan. Courses include auto-graded quizzes, peer-reviewed assignments, on-demand video lectures, and community discussion forums.
Many courses offer an audit option, which lets you see most course materials for free, but you won’t be able to submit certain assignments or get grades.
Coursera Together, their promotion in response to COVID-19, allows users to take some complete courses and even earn a certificate free of charge.
Ed-X, an education non-profit created by Harvard and MIT, also offers seniors and others to audit its online classes free of charge. Auditors have access to course video, lectures, reading, and ungraded practice assignments and can participate as much or as little as they like for the expected length of each course.
Udemy (You-demy) puts “You” inside an academy, offering hundreds of free online courses from video game coding and web development to photography and meditation.
Udemy also works in the other direction, allowing you to teach others the skills you’ve taken a lifetime to master.
So, instead of becoming a couch potato, why not enrich yourself with a new skill? Instead of wasting hours playing games, why not learn how to code one?
