The head of Ukraine’s state nuclear power company Energoatom on Monday called for a demilitarized zone to be established at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant after the site was hit by shelling earlier this week.

Russia and Ukraine have each accused the other of shelling the nuclear power plant, which is Europe’s largest and lies in Russian-controlled southern Ukraine.

“The situation is very dangerous. We encountered such a situation at Chornobyl nuclear power plant, if you remember. But there is a very big difference here: there are six power units, all of them filled with nuclear materials. Also, there are pools of spent nuclear fuel,” he said.

“All of it requires to be constantly cooled at the expense of working pumps. These pumps run on electricity,” he added.

Meanwhile, the permanent representative of Ukraine to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Jewhenij Zymbaljuk, warned of “huge consequences” for Ukraine and all of Europe if a catastrophe were to occur at the nuclear plant.
