The Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary is a Catholic doctrine that asserts that Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, was assumed into Heaven, body and soul, at the end of her life on earth. The belief is based on centuries of tradition and the understanding that as the perfect vessel for Jesus' birth and upbringing, she could not have been left to decay in the grave, nor would her body have been corrupted by death. The Assumption is celebrated annually as a holy day of obligation on August 15th.
