Check out this short video on using teflon tape or pipe dope to make water tight connections. There is a correct way on how to apply teflon tape. Both do work but certain situations teflon tape works better for different pipe types such as PVC and galvanized pipe. Everyone has their preferences on what kind of thread sealant to use, but this has seemed to work well for us over the years.
