You most likely have seen motors spin with 2 wires, called brushed motors, like in RC toys or drones. But why did we invent 3 wire motors? Also, how do they work anyway? Adding another wire seems like a small change, but it makes a world of difference. These motors are called brushless motors.
Disclaimer: do not hold a spinning BLDC motor with a prop attached with pliers as seen in the video! With this being the first time I've spun a BLDC motor, I was naive in thinking it was relatively safe. IT IS NOT. Props on BLDC motors can spin at around half the speed of sound at the tips, and even though the prop is light, it can still cut your hands/fingers badly!
