Tyla - The Making of 'Water' (Vevo Footnotes)
One of the breakout tracks of 2023, Tyla’s “Water” traffics in unabashed sultriness. When the South African singer graced our DSCVR studio over the summer, she went so far as to label it “naughty.” If people are batting an eye at the lyrics, they certainly can’t protest the fact that it ended the five and a half decade drought of a solo South African artist being in the Billboard Hot 100. Plenty of heads have turned toward the equally hot and heavy video, which is currently bolting towards 100 million views. “Hot, sweaty, sexy. That’s the brand,” she explained to Footnotes. It was wise of director Child to turn to Britney Spears’ “Slave For You,” Beyoncé’s “Baby Boy,” and Alex Webb’s photography for inspo, one of many great details we gleaned from talking to the duo. Dive in, the water’s nice.
