Amandla Stenberg's relationship to her Nordic roots has grown exponentially over the years. But as a child, the region was "kind of a vague concept" for the actress. "My dad would come into class and he would talk about Denmark,” she recalls. Her first visit to her father's birth country came about when the actress was eight years old. “What I remember most from that trip, because I was so little, was honestly the Little Mermaid [statue],” she says. “That was the most exciting thing to me.”

Denmark remained a “fantasy place that my dad came from” until recently, when she spent three months in Copenhagen. “Now I’ve gotten to make some of my closest friends there,” she says. “I found queer community there and communities of colour that have surprised and amazed me.”

Here, watch Stenberg speaking on her Inuit and Danish roots and how socialism affects Danish socialising.
