"The Wolf" ('Canis lupus'), (a.k.a: the gray, or grey wolf), is a large canine, that is native to Eurasia and North America. More than thirty sub-species of Canis lupus have been recognized, including the dog and dingo, although, grey wolves as popularly understood, only comprise naturally-occurring, wild sub-species. The wolf is the largest extant member of the family 'Canidae' and is further distinguished from other Canis species by its less pointed ears and muzzle, as well as, a shorter torso and a longer tail. The wolf is nonetheless related closely enough, to smaller Canis species, such as the coyote and the golden jackal, to produce fertile hybrids with them. The wolf's fur is usually mottled white, brown, gray and black, although, sub-species. in the Arctic region may be nearly all white. Of all members of the genus 'Canis', the wolf is most specialized for cooperative game hunting, as demonstrated by its physical adaptations to tackling large prey, its higher social nature and its highly advanced expressive behaviour, including individual, or group howling. Wolves were given protection, under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973 and have since returned to parts of their former range, thanks to both natural recolonizations and reintroductions in Yellowstone and Idaho. Wolves are also still found in: the northern Rocky Mountains region Mexico, Europe, (excluding Russia), Belarus, Ukraine. Finland, Eastern Europe, Southern Europe, the Middle East, Israel, Oman, Iran, India, southern Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Mongolia & China. But, wolves have been exterminated in: Great Britain, Ireland, Russia, Central Europe, France, Japan and in much of Scandinavia. The 'fear' of wolves has been pervasive in many societies, though, humans are not part of the wolf's 'natural prey'. How wolves react to humans depends largely on their prior experience with people. Wolves who are lacking any negative experience of humans, or, those which are food-conditioned, may show little fear of people. Although, some wolves may react aggressively when provoked, such attacks are mostly limited to quick bites on extremities and the attacks are not pressed. Predatory attacks on humans are 'usually' only experienced: when the wolf is rabid, when they are protecting their young, or, when food supplies are low, or non-existent and they are present, while in a pack.
