Genetic engineering (GE) is direct, DNA-level modification. Although AHB’s poplars are interspecies hybrids, they are not engineered in this modern sense. In the future, however, GE could be a useful tool for improving the sustainability and economic benefits from poplar and other trees used as bioenergy feedstocks. In this webinar, Amy Klocko and Steve Strauss from the Oregon State University shared information about progress in the field of genetic engineering of trees, including their own work on means for biocontainment of GE and exotic trees to facilitate public and regulatory acceptance.
