This is my second full length string instrument build. Many nights of solitude brought this idea to life over the last 7 months.

The design was inspired by german concert hall architecture. Specifically, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany which I had the chance to visit in June. The walls had interesting holes milled through them based on computer algorithms that redirect the sound to where you are listening. While the holes I drilled through my instrument are far less functional, they live by the same purpose, to guide sounds to your ears.

It was my first time working with dense hardwoods like wenge and padauk. I swear some slivers still remain in my fingertips but I think it was worth it for the vibrant, porous finish it left me with. I also decided to include a skateboard in the body as my interest in recycled skateboard lumber was what brought me to build instruments initially.

It was also my first time casting metal for this project. Working with wax and metals at high temperatures with no experience was a big learning curve. But I managed to get past all the failed attempts to reach a result on the hinged tailpiece that I am happy with.

Finally, I got to work with my first leather hide. The strap has a thrifted suede handbag strap riveted down the middle of a 11 ounce buffalo strip. The buckle was casted out of 925 sterling silver alongside a weird asymmetrical ring I sculpted and sewed into the strap.

You may notice that there are no fret markers along the neck. This was intentional as I aim to explore this instrument without visual cues.

The sounds in the video were composed using an upright piano, synthesizers, various effects pedals, and of course, the bass. I suggest wearing headphones.

Thank you to my parents for tolerating all the noise and clutter.

Thank you to Mike for letting me use his leather tools for so long.
Thank you to Miguel for helping with the photoshoot.
Thank you to Nel and anyone else that provided inspiration during the time I was building.
Thank you for watching.
