Mercedes took the veils off the much anticipated second generation of the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT sportscar at the Monterey Car Week.

At market launch, the new AMG GT Coupé will be launched with two performance levels of the AMG 4.0‑litre V8 biturbo engine.

In the top model GT 63 4MATIC+, the engine delivers 577 hp (430 kW) and provides a maximum torque of 590 pound-feet (800 Nm) over a wide engine speed range from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm.

In the GT 55 4MATIC+, the V8 unit develops an output of 469 hp (350 kW) and a maximum torque of 516 pound-feet (700 Nm).

The sports car is exclusively available with a 9-speed AMG Speedshift automatic that is now mounted behind the engine and features a wet starting clutch instead of a torque converter.

Mercedes-Benz launched the AMG GT way back in 2014, designed to directly compete with the likes of Audi R8 and Porsche 911.

The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe goes on sale in the second quarter of next year.

It seems likely that the approximate estimate for the 55 GT will be $125,000, given the expected natural increase, and new additions of all-wheel-drive, and 2+2 seating options.

The more powerful GT 63 is almost certain to kick off north of $160,000, with future S and GT-R additions just as likely to breach the $200,000 barrier.
