This was Elvis Presley's first commercial release: the breakthrough moment in 20th century popular culture.
Perhaps to modern ears it sounds tame, but to Memphians and other Southerners in 1954 this was shockingly raw and ground-breaking in its inter-racial blend.
For his first on-air radio interview just days after this was recorded, the DJ thought it necessary to clarify for the listeners that Elvis was actually a white boy singing the blues.
And yet, Elvis was not simply spontaneously covering Arthur Crudup's original single as is always suggested -- he had come to Sun Records with his own adaptation of several songs from Crudup's catalogue.
