Sugar poses a silent threat to health regardless of one's weight. Excessive intake can lead to insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes, and suppress the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections. High sugar diets also promote atherosclerosis, potentially resulting in heart disease, and chronic inflammation, which is linked to increased pain and joint degeneration. Notably, these detrimental effects are primarily associated with added and simple sugars, not complex carbohydrates, highlighting the importance of discerning sugar types in our diets for maintaining health.

Jeffrey Peng MD is a nonoperative orthopedist and sports medicine specialist. He focuses on maximizing non-surgical treatments for sports injuries and orthopedic conditions.
