In this video I have a little bit of free time to spend on the 1966 CJ5 Saginaw Steering Upgrade. Today the frame boxing plates that I fabricated are getting welded into the left and right frame rails. This will give plenty of support when the steering box mounting bracket gets welded in. Next the steering box is clamped to the frame rail and the spud shaft is thru the hole that I cut in the crossmember with plenty of room to allow the U joint to turn freely.
Next the dash is clamped in and a new steering shaft column is fit thru the body tub. Critical dimensions and things to look out for are discussed so you get the best installation possible. While this upgrade is a lot of work the benefits are worth it. The drag link, bellcrank and factory tie rod tubes are removed and this Saginaw unit neatly slips into place out front. The feeling you get when using this steering setup is fantastic and you will really feel connected to the road. More to come in future videos.
