Melissa Walker earned her BA in Costume Design and History from UNC - Chapel Hill and went on to study Fashion at Lorenzo di Medici in Florence, Italy. She began her career in theater working under William Ivey Long, dabbled in fabric design at Ce Soir NY and finally moved to Los Angeles to design sustainable clothing for eco brand, Livity.

Walker began transitioning back into costuming, working her way up from Seamstress to Supervisor to Costume Designer. This allowed her to learn from such greats as Deb Scott, Mark Bridges and Christine Wada, while also cultivating her own relationships with directors and producers. She got her first break designing from Kevin Smith, and has been fortunate enough to work for him several times, mixing in contemporary, period, made to order, sci-fi and pop culture, that inspired her growing up. She seeks out meaningful stories with layered characters that she can elevate with design choices and non-verbal storytelling.

She continues to incorporate sustainable and indie apparel designs whenever possible to prioritize her own values through screen time. She released her own capsule collection for PEN15 using upcycled vintage, deadstock and ethical manufacturing through Land That Look, and works to build this community with other Costume Designers to highlight their influence on trends, and transcend the gap between costume and fashion.

Walker has been fortunate to round out her career between film and television, comedy and drama, costume and fashion, allowing her to incorporate period and contemporary to find the most authentic looks, and highlight the range of character.
