Sarah Natochenny, who voiced Ash Ketchum for 17 years, learned at the same time as everyone else that the 10 year-old Pokémon trainer finally won his first World Championship. The news was bittersweet. This meant that Natochenny’s time as Ash Ketchum was coming to an end. A month later, the Pokémon Company announced that the anime would move on from Ash as a main character.

The Washington Post’s video game team Launcher sat down with Natochenny to discuss her experience as a voice actor after taking over for Veronica Taylor as Ash — and what’s next for her and the Pokémon anime.
