We find a free roadside tree stump normally destined for the fire pit, and discovered a secret that made this an amazing block of wood for a large vase. Initial cuts and review of the wood grain revealed that a fungus had grown inside the stump and most likely killed the tree, creating some amazing spalted woodgrain and color shifts in the wood. Fresh cut wood is too wet to make anything until it has been dried, and the wood is done shrinking and warping, you know, just like your wet lumber from the home center!

We did an initial thick turning on the vase knowing it needed to be dried further, and our kitty litter kiln worked like magic, bringing the vase down to 7% moisture content in 7 weeks. This video picks up the finishing efforts after all that, and all the added shrinking and warping of the wood. It required some final lathe work to make the vase round again, and the spalted wooggrain in the finished piece is simply wicked. Insane woodgrain and a fully waterproofed marine epoxy coating on the inside of the vase means that this wood vase can actually hold water.

It was an awesome project and the results add a touch of artistic style to this functional flower vase. I hope you join us for this video!
