From my euphonium recital at University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. This piece was the opener, the final movement of the Hummel Concerto for Trumpet. I often use trumpet pieces for teaching, because the student can listen to the very best trumpet players and try to emulate them. I studied the piece myself with Daniel Patrylak, trumpet professor at the University of Connecticut and former trumpet with the Eastman Brass Quintet. This is the first time I've had a good chance to perform it in public. Most of the movement is not too demanding, but there are some very fast fingering passages and some measures that require lip trills to perform on a euphonium. Performing with me is pianist Dr. Barbara Young. She demonstrates not only fine musicianship in general, but also is the model of an accompanist. There were some planned tempo changes and at least once when I got a little excited and sped up a bit, and Barbara not only followed me, but made it sound natural. It's a skill that not every piano artist has, but I am always glad to perform with Barbara because she really gets it.
