Austin, Texas — Former Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo is returning to Austin. City hall announced today that he'll serve as a new interim assistant city manager "dedicated solely" to the Austin Police Department.

Acevedo served as Austin's police chief for nearly 10 years, leaving in 2016 to serve as police chief in Houston. He's currently interim police chief in Aurora, Colorado, and after a busy 13 months there, he's eager to get back home to family.

"It was time to come home. I was going to come home no matter what." Acevedo said. "You can't keep commuting. It's not fair to my family, it's not fair to the city of Aurora and it's not fair to the officers."

Acevedo's coming back to Austin in a new role as assistant city manager which will center solely around the Austin Police Department. In a letter to the mayor and city council, Interim city manager Jose Garza says he hopes this "focused level of support" will help bolster a department struggling with staffing and recruitment.
