Exploring the wilderness has grown in popularity by leaps and bounds over the past decade. More and more people want to enjoy nature, whether it’s deep in the woods where you can get lost for days or at a provincial park outside a major city. This has become so popular that auto manufacturers are now designing car models that are specifically meant to tackle the rough terrain of the wilderness. Two such vehicles are the 2023 Subaru Outback and the 2023 Mazda CX-50.

The Mazda CX-50 is available with two engines: a 2.5L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder and a turbocharged 2.5L 4-cylinder. Not to be outdone, the Subaru outback is also available with two engine options. The standard engine is a 2.5L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder boxer engine while the optional engine is a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder boxer engine.

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 starts at $38,250 for the GS-L trim. The GT trim starts at $43,200 and can cost as much as $48,200 if optioned with the turbocharged engine. The 2023 Subaru Outback starts at a lower price of $32,695, but it can cost a little bit more at the other end, with the Premier XT trim starting at $46,395. These are MSRPs and do not include fees & taxes.
