Here we discuss a number of authors who argue that democracy helps to cultivate virtue in its citizenry and lead to outcomes more in line with the common good. These include Aristotle, Spinoza, Tocqueville, and Mill. Then we engage some arguments on the other side, holding that democracy actually makes people worse; more subject to their individual passions. Authors considered there included Plato, Augustine and Nietzsche. As before, we follow the presentation of Jason Brennan in his book Democracy: A Guided Tour (Oxford 2023).
