The world is not set up for individual people and the lack of a husband or extended family network leaves many women vulnerable to homelessness as they age, despite societal expectations that they will be able to support themselves.

The average black woman earns less than $28,000 a year. That means, to finance a thirty-year retirement that starts at age 67, one should strive to accumulate $1.3 million in savings.

"Magical thinking" and assuming that things will work out financially is a dangerous trend in the black community. Men should prioritize their own well-being and choose partners who are committed to being their partners.
