Since Duran Duran's meteoric rise in the 1980's, most industry journalists are quick to mock them. They never understood the phenomenon. They never felt the hysteria. They never got to appreciate the Duran Duran magic - the experience - leaving most people to think the band disappeared 35 years ago.

Coupled with their good looks, their flamboyant sense of fashion and style, as well as an ever present sense of humour - it's very easy to 'fall in love' with them and their songs. This love spills over into screaming, and combined with other fans screaming, it boils over into hysteria.

As soon as I'd released Laughing with... Duran Duran - The Movie, I kept finding more clips (on youtube) that I couldn't throw away. The lifestyle of constant touring, no days off, pressure, fans, and constant screaming. I used to have a copy of a film called The Duran Duran Phenomenon, and I got the idea to make a film about that - the Mania.

This was another project which turned into a monster. Each day youtube would keep finding me new clips to look at, each with their own funny twists and stories. As I went through them and arranged the clips, I noticed certain themes kept coming up. Fans! for sure. But also constant travelling, airports, press conferences, news, TV spots, shows, and after all of that, recording sessions. I noticed too many documentaries focused on the glamour boys side of things, or the 'wild boys' image. I wanted to offer some kind of antidote to all of those dry featurettes. This one turned into a opus of fan fanatica, the madness and the mayhem, but also looking at the funny side.

Near the end of the project I finally came up with the name "40 Years of Hysteria", and when I uploaded it to youtube, one of the thumbnails was the blue image of a woman holding a lighter. This was a completely random event which seemed to sum up the project, even though the image itself was taken from a frame of very low resolution footage. I added titles to this image, and it became almost like my icon - a blue weeping Rio woman. One of the final things I did was to add her as the background image of the end credits; which fades into an artwork version of her with eyes closed and now smiling.

A clip of Sylvester Stallone saying: "the Rambo head band idea came from a British pop group" (referring to the My Own Way video) is no longer on YouTube. I wanted to show JT flopping down on the beach with a rifle in the Rio video, to show how life imitates art.

Issues:
1 - I felt 'Laughing With.. Duran Duran the Movie' was a little too John and Nick centric. This feels Simon and Roger centric.
2 - JT doesn't appear much in the Warren section, making it look like the band was a threesome.
3 - The Union Jack-et and bus stories are not directly fan related.
4 - Although this is supposed to be a Laughing movie, it often makes me chock up.

Update History:
-V1-Random clips
-V2-Reordered them into chunks
-V3A - Reordered the chunks more chronologically
-V3B - More reordering.
- V3D added an extra ending because of a youtube bug, which freezes the ending on a black screen.
- V3E got 10 copyright notices. I replaced the Rio music for the Ellen show, but tried to keep the live crowd in the background.
- V3F replaced the trumpet solo music of Skin Trade during the miming section to one from the Electro Set; which replaced the copyrighted album version.
- V3F replaced 'Sunrise' music during Nicks tour of London with a more modern version, ironically without Andy! I couldnt find a clean version of the song from the right period.
- V3G - still got 5 copyright notices, mostly around the miming section, which I dont want to change for obvious reasons.
-V3H - clip of NR and RT during the 'icons of style' bit. Clip of a staged alternative location for the Cheapside squat (the real thing was allegedly demolished years ago). Durandy clip changed. Skin Trade Mining clip now has original sound again.
-V3I - added Serious Inst to Nick's bicycle story., and Anniversary Inst. to the very end.
