Using the wrong technique in self-defense is sort of dangerous. It's like telling your girl that she's getting a little chubby. Or that her mother is a little nuts. No good can come from it. Well, all kidding aside, despite the incredible genius of Bruce Lee, he did have a few bad ideas and the backfist was one of them. As far as striking goes it's a terrible idea and in this video we explain why as well as give you better alternatives.
