This is the 2022 GMC Hummer EV and here are 10 of the hottest things about one of the most anticipated new vehicles around.

It does have hints of the old Avalanche with the general shape, but there’s so much here that yells for attention. It’s definitely got truck cred with a five-foot bed and a six-way tailgate. The rear power window slides down for a complete open-air experience when the Infinity roof panels come off. They can do that thanks to the solid frame and low center of gravity of the Ultium platform. That’s the architecture all future GM EVs will be built on.

All those intimidating looks don’t do any good if you can’t drive them anywhere. Well, number 2 is good news, the Hummer EV gets up to 329-miles of range.

Thanks to a massive 24 cell - 200kWh battery, the Hummer has solid storage capacity. With that capacity does come a downside, weight. This battery weighs almost 3000 pounds. So, the Hummer EV weighs in at a whopping 9,046 pounds.

Charging will of course be a consideration and GM is going to give you the best advantage you can that allows you to hook up to a DC fast charger.

Since this looks like it’s from the future, you can bet the Hummer’s got some very futuristic tech including, my number 3, Super Cruise, if you want to spring for it because it’s optional.

No one’s calling it autonomous driving, it will make you keep your hands on the wheel, but this is the same elegant system Cadillac uses and it’s great. Super Cruise works on about 200k roads that are programmed into it and will even change lanes for you when it finds the opportunity. It’s a killer system, very smooth and confidence-inspiring.

Let’s dive even deeper into the Hummer’s tech, with Number 4. Check out UltraVision. This is where in the movie I’m pitching I say, “and it comes with 18 available cameras, so you can take a camera man out of your budget.”

Crab walk is like rear-wheel steering on steroids. It can turn all four wheels diagonally to about 10-degrees to get the driver out of a tricky situation either off road or hey, even in a parking lot around those pesky carts people leave everywhere. This is a very interesting feature and something to utilize while maneuvering through narrow paths if there are big rocks in your way or even dodging shopping carts in the grocery store parking lot.

Speaking of that agility, the Hummer employs rear-wheel steering in many driving situations, not just Crab Walk, and has the same turning radius as a Chevy Sonic, if you can wrap your head around that one. That rear-wheel steering is an absolute game changer out on the trail in narrow turns.

The Hummer has some insane off-road DNA. You can e-lock the front diff and the rear motors can simulate a rear locker. A sophisticated torque vectoring system can shift power up to each rear wheel depending on what you need.

Rear wheel slip didn’t last very long on steep inclines and we got up one pretty decent obstacle. The power feels plentiful and that massive torque number provides a lot of grunt for getting up and over stuff. As an off-roader, big trucks are normally hampered by their size, but thanks to that rear-wheel steering, the Hummer EV doesn’t suffer.

The suspension is fully independent suspension and good for 13-inches of travel at the front and rear. That’s Raptor territory. And it’s got continuously adaptive dampers at all four corners.

Room for someone my size is almost laughable. I sat fine in both front and rear. There are creative storage areas and the seats are comfortable. Visibility is also great.

The Hummer EV gets up to 1000 hp out of up to three motors. One up front and two in the rear. GMC creatively calculated torque at 11,500 lb ft, but traditionally, it’s closer to 1200 lb-ft of torque.

At higher speeds you do feel the weight of the Hummer. This is still a 9,000-pound behemoth and momentum either stopping or starting is just physics. When it comes to braking, you won’t get a true one-pedal regen experience because frankly, I think you’d need 30-inch rotors to stop this thing. Get on the brake pedal early. It’s deceiving how much it takes to stop this thing. As for the steering, it isn’t as spot on center as you might hope, but that’s a true truck experience and it’s not offensive.

The Hummer EV comes to a dealer near you soon, but you can pre-order yours now, even though the Edition 1 sold out in ten minutes. And according to GMC there’s now a three-year waiting list. See, Hollywood, sold in the room!
