I'm using inexpensive materials to make a modern DIY gutter than will accent my new, minimalist deck roof and solve my drainage problems. There are much easier ways to install a gutter, but that's not really how I do things. I'm going for something unique. And as usual, I'm doing it super cheap.
You don't have to tell me I'm crazy for using a garden hose as a downspout either. I well aware of that too. Fortunately the roof is not so large that it overflows the gutter. Living in Pennsylvania, we get rain for days at a time, but almost never as severe as in the south. So the garden hose can usually take it.
You can find 8 inch or 10 inch aluminum flashing and dowel rods like the ones I'm using at any building supply store.
