Today’s song was a comeback #1 hit for a legendary band named the Doobie Brothers who lost their iconic singer, Tom Johnston to Sickness. What A Fool Believes was written in a cool way… It was actually a collaboration between 2 legends Michel McDonald and Kenny Loggins. There were both aware of one another and wanted to write together. So a meeting was set… Kenny Loggins pulled up to Michael McDonald's house he could hear that the smooth voiced yacht rocker was at the piano trying to work out a song part he was stuck on… It was “What a Fool Believes” As Kenny made his way to the door the rest of the song came to him and he immediately said I know how the rest of the song should go and he sad this right before he shook hands and met him for the first time and they nailed the song in just a short time. up next we have interviews with both legends and get the real story of the definitive Yacht rock song ever! It went to #1 in 1979 one of the only non disco song to do so and won a grammy for song of the year!

So it’s time for another edition of our series The New Standards. This show takes an in-depth look into songs that transcend genre, decade, and fads - songs that are monumental touchstones in our culture and society. today we’re giving you the story behind the 1979 classic What A Fool Believes from both Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. They two wrote it together in the late 70s and it has become on of the greatest most perfect songs of the rock era. So let’s go back to get the story straight:

By the end of 1974, the Doobie Brothers had been a mainstay on 70s radio with massive hits like Listen to the Music, Long Train Running and China Grove. Lead singers Tom Johnson and Pat Simmons were on a roll. Then they had their first #1 hit with the Simmons sung Black Water… Then Tom Johnston’s health went from bad to worse… He was suffering from the rigors of the road. He even missed out on Dick Clarks New Years rocking eve that the band was due to play with the big artists of the day including the Beach Boys, Chicago, and Olivia Newton John.

The Doobies then released Stamped which contained a great cover of the Motown hit Take Me In your Arms sung by Johnston… along with the brilliant Pat Simmons contribution "I Cheat the Hangman”. By the start of the Spring 1975 Johnston's condition was so terrible that the legend required emergency hospitalization for a bleeding ulcer. With Johnston resting and the tour for Stamped already going Skunk Baxter who had played with the great Steely Dan ended up recruiting a fellow Steely Dan alum to help with singing duties None other than singer, songwriter, and keyboardist Michael McDonald.
