12 observations from the Chargers vs. Vengeance

By: Martin Baldomar

Sunday afternoon saw a highly anticipated game between the Central Penn Chargers (2-0) and Baltimore Vengeance (2-0). This game had every implication of being a smash mouth, action packed show of talent on both sides of the field. The game started out slow, but the Chargers resilience and consistency on both sides of the ball enabled them to walk away with a win. Here are my takeaways from the Chargers vs. Vengeance game.

1. The Chargers came right out of the gate firing on all cylinders with a strong and dominate defensive presence. They had constant pressure on the quarterback and forced him to make untimed throws and Miss Key progressions as well. The defense definitely set the tone early.

2. Defensive Back #6 Chaz Powell and Cornerback #36 L’Mar Calhoun also set the tone by playing aggressive in their match-ups and limiting the opposing quarterbacks options. Both of these players showed great awareness and consistency at the goal line as well.

3. The match-ups between the Chargers cornerbacks and the Vengeance wide receivers favored the Chargers early in the game. The Vengeance offense went all four downs on three separate drives due to constant pressure that the Chargers defense laid on in the first half.

4. In the first half there were some miscues and issues on the offensive front early in the game. However, led by quarter back Bob Moore, the chargers high powered offense made the adjustments and came in the second half full force and scoring 34 unanswered points.

5. #18 Dominick Hobdy proved to be a very reliable weapon for quarterback Bob Moore as being his go to receiver on 3rd down situations. Hobdy size and speed proved to be no match for the Vengeance defense.

6. The resilience of the Chargers offense was a key focal point in this game. Led by quarterback Bob Moore, the offense did not give up and managed to bounce back from an early 25-14 lead by the vengeance and came back stronger than ever in the second half.

7. The second half started out huge for the Chargers as #36 L’Mar Calhoun returned a kickoff for a touchdown which would turn the momentum and the game in the Chargers favor.

8. Quarterback Bob Moore made the necessary adjustments that seemed to plague the offense in the first half and came in rolling full speed making the necessary plays in and out of the pocket to help the Chargers build a strong comeback in the third quarter.

9. The defensive line established the tone early in the game. However, it was the second half where they really shined and proved to be no match for the opposing offensive line. #71 Corey Saunders, #44 Stan Kelly, and #82 Mason Sweitzer applied constant pressure throughout the entire 2nd half making it very difficult for the opposing offense to get anything going.

10. The defense in the second half came in applied serious pressure forcing 2 key fumbles that lead to touchdowns, including a crucial fumble recovery in the 4th quarter. The defense really brought a very strong effort and overall performance in the 2nd half.

11. Cornerback Sa’Quan Hicks really brought his game in the second half by isolating his match-ups and not allowing a single reception his way. This further frustrated the opposing offense as their main read was cancelled out the entire 2nd half.

12. The Chargers offense solidified their victory led by Bob Moore with 3 crucial touchdown passes to Ray Lewis, Keith Stokes and sealing the game with a touchdown pass to Dominick Hobdy putting an end to a game most would say that it truly lived up to the hype and anticipation and improving the Chargers to a 3-0 record.

MVP: This recognition goes to Chargers quarterback Bob Moore who overcame all odds and made the necessary adjustments to bring the offense back in the second half to win the game. Moore proved that he cannot only make plays with his arm, but he can also do it with his feet as well giving the opposing defensive line a very tough time.
