The Wedding Banquet (1993) was the second film by now-famous director Ang Lee. It's a film with some technical flaws and (more than a few) acting flaws, but upon rewatch, the message of the film, that we need to accept Gay people and make them feel loved in our families and in society at large, is a message that doesn't feel dated at all. The film highlights a problem of lack of Gay representation and the oppressive nature of straight society, something that is unfortunately still prevalent in society today and still very prevalent amongst weirdo conservative YouTube commentators who are always spouting off about the dangers of Gay culture and its effect on children. This film from Taiwan shows the effect a conservative Confucian household has on a Gay son. This Taiwanese film which was nominated for best foreign film at the Oscars may be responsible for the trend of Gay cinema that has emerged in Taiwan and probably help contribute to the positive environment that Taiwan fosters toward gay and queer people. It's a film that society at large needs to revisit because lately there have been some scary anti-homosexual sentiments re-emerging from right-wing psychos like Tim Pool and Matt Walsh.
