Despite the Suez Canal being located in Egypt, it was owned and controlled by the British and the French for the first 9 decades of its existence. Shortly after the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, the charismatic Gamal Abdel Nasser rose to the forefront to lead Egypt. In 1956, Nasser would make the most important decision of his career when he nationalised the foreign-owned Suez Canal; his power and the legacy he would subsequently carve out for himself all hung in the balance as the British and French colluded with Israel to bring him down.
