History of Brazil’s coffee production
● During the 19th century, as disease ravaged Asia’s coffee regions, immigrant
workers began joining the Brazilian coffee industry and the country’s
agriculture sector became industrialized, setting the stage for Brazil to become
the world’s largest coffee producer – a position it still holds.
● In an attempt to ameliorate the situation, the Brazilian government committed
to buying all of the country’s coffee and keeping it off the market until prices
stabilized.
● Finally, after almost 30 years of focusing on satisfying distribution demand
rather than improving quality and innovation, Brazil abandoned the ICA and
created the Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association (BSCA) to transform the
country into a prominent coffee producer.
● To discover, promote and recognize the country's high-quality coffee, Brazil
launched the "Cup of Excellence" jury competition.
