COUNT MAGNUS - By M.R.James

 Published On Mar 31, 2024

In this eerie tale, we follow the footsteps of a curious traveller named Mr. Wraxall as he embarks on a journey through the haunting landscapes of Sweden. Wraxall stumbles upon an ancient manor house in Vestergothland—a place steeped in secrets and shadows.
The focal point of his fascination is none other than Count Magnus, a figure shrouded in mystery and ominous legend.
Wraxall, a travelogue author, encounters an old manor house during his travels. The locals speak of Count Magnus, a harsh landowner known for severe punishments and mysterious deeds.
Houses built too close to his lands have an uncanny tendency to burn down.
Wraxall delves into family papers and discovers a book titled Liber nigræ peregrinationis.
This book reveals that Count Magnus undertook the enigmatic Black Pilgrimage to Chorazin. The pilgrimage involved saluting the Prince of the Air, an otherworldly entity.
The local church houses a mausoleum built by Count Magnus for himself and his family.
Wraxall visits the mausoleum and finds scenes from the Count’s life depicted on the copper sarcophagus.
One chilling scene shows a man pursued by a cloaked figure with tentacles while Count Magnus watches from a hill.
Wraxall’s obsession grows, and he desires to see Count Magnus.
As he chants near the mausoleum, the padlocks securing the sarcophagus inexplicably unlock.
The lid rises, and Wraxall flees, leaving the mausoleum unsecured.
Back in England, Wraxall feels the presence of two strange figures among his fellow passengers.
He arrives safely but senses that something lingers—a connection to the unearthly events in Sweden.
“Count Magnus” weaves together folklore, alchemy, and the supernatural, leaving readers with a lingering sense of unease and curiosity. It’s a masterful example of M. R. James’s ability to evoke dread through subtle details and hidden horrors.
