The week before the Supreme Court hears arguments in the highest profile Second Amendment case since Heller, Georgetown Law’s Supreme Court Institute hosted a live virtual event exploring the issues at stake in New York Rifle v. Bruen. Georgetown Law Dean and constitutional historian William M. Treanor moderated the panel which included speakers who have filed amicus briefs for both sides of the case, argued before the Supreme Court, and have explored the right to bear arms as it intersects with public safety, individual liberties, Black Americans and the lessons of history.

Speakers:

William M. Treanor, Dean of Georgetown Law; constitutional historian (Moderator)

Mary McCord, Visiting Professor and Executive Director of Georgetown Law’s Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection (authored amicus brief on behalf of former national security officials in support of the respondent)

Robert Leider, Professor at George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School (filed amicus brief in support of petitioner)

Robert Cottrol, Professor at The George Washington University Law School; Co-author of Insurgent Victory: Heller, McDonald and the Restoration of the Second Amendment
