At around $53,000 driveaway, the MG HS+EV is a pricey MG, but a relatively affordable midsize plug-in hybrid SUV. Andrew Chesterton has family tested it over three months to see how its petrol-electric tech measures up in terms of economy and day-to-day ease-of-use.

Each month he took a different approach to mimic likely customer habits. Charge the car once, then run it for the rest of the month like a regular petrol-powered SUV. Next month, let the car’s brain optimise the mix of petrol and electric power.
