Recently, there has been a lot of disillusionment pertaining to whether diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives can actually make a difference in your community. Even though there are positive intentions in the community industry to create spaces that are diverse, inclusive and where everyone feels a sense of belonging, as a leader it can sometimes feel like you are spinning like a top in mud — going nowhere and not having the impact you desire. Why? Because you are still only scratching the surface and the actions that you are taking are coming from a reactive and passive lens. It is time for us to go deeper, to go beyond Equity & Inclusion 101 - to step into not just being community leaders but to becoming community disruptors. Community disruptors who are not just focused on intention but on the actual impact the work you are doing is having on the people you are creating your spaces for. This talk will not just be about learning but unlearning and disrupting the status quo on how you show up to build equitable and inclusive impact-driven strategies into your community.
