Atago is exceptionally large and flavorful. This juicy fruit is rich with subtle, tropical flavors of mango, kiwi, and passionfruit, as well as hints of citrus and melon. It is known for its wonderfully refreshing crunch when you bite into it. The nine variety of our Asian Pear fruit trees are - Atago, Hosui, Kosui, Niitaka, Olympic (Korean Giant), Shinko, Shinseiki (New Century), Shinsui & Yoinashi. We planted them bare roots. If you want to find out how to plant bare root trees please check out our tutorial video on that topic.

Our last updates were on 2017 . The fist set of videos we did on these nashi trees were done in 2013, therefore we could also consider these updates as "ten (10) years later", although the first few trees were planted between 2009-2010. So most of these nashi trees are about 15 years old.

Unlike some Asian pears that like it hot, light tan Atago develops sweet, juicy flavor even in cooler summer weather. This variety is the biggest pear in Japan and it is original from the Okayama prefecture.

The fruit is large, very firm, crisp and juicy. This Asian pear is a cross between Nijisseiki and Imamura Aki and is superior to Niitaka. Atago has a long and profuse bloom period, making it a good choice as a pollenizer. Very little thinning required for large fruit. Fruit hangs well on the tree. Unlike most Asian pears this variety will fruit and sweeten in cooler summer locations. It's easy to recognize because of its enormous size compared with other Asian Pears. An Atago pear was recently entered into the world record books for being the heaviest pear at 6 lb 8 oz. A brown russeted Asian pear for the late season, it has a long and profused bloom. Trees are upright, spreading and medium in vigor.

Often Asian pears are called apple pears because they are crisp and juicy like apples but with a different and distinctive texture. They also are called salad pears, Nashi (Japanese for "pear"), Oriental, Chinese or Japanese pears (Nihonnashi). All Asian pears today are selected seedlings or crosses made within Pyrus serotina.

The fruits may be smooth and thin-skinned, in colors ranging from moonlight yellow, and yellow-green, to caramel, or they may be russeted shades of these.
