In this episode of Turning Leak Detection Into Repair, we are at a customer's home where an Irrigation Line has lost pressure, telling us there's a break in the line. This is where we use our Irrigation Kit from LeakTronics.

The customer's residential property has four zones with sprinkler heads. Two are in the front yard, with the solenoids by the front of the house, and two are at the back of the property where the irrigation line runs around the back of the property. We are clearly seeing the loss at the front zone. We've found the furthest sprinkler head from the solenoids, so we are going to isolate the line using capped off stand pipes, as you'll see in the video, and we'll use the PG-2 Pulse Generator to inject a gentle pulse into the line to find where the pipes run under the driveway and under the lawn. This will allow us to trace the line and mark the areas where we will listen for the leak in the pipe.

Using a stand pipe, and the pressure in the irrigation line, we put the PG-2 at the furthest sprinkler head and turn it on. We have evacuated the water to the street using a standard garden hose. see the pulsing water coming out of the end of the hose.

Using the Soil Probe in the irrigation Kit, we start listening under the soil with the pointed tip. This allows us to bypass scratchy grass and surface areas that would otherwise give us handling noises. When it comes to listening under the concrete, we attach the 3 inch listening disc to the end of the probe. Like a DeckPlate, this listens under concrete and through the ground underneath to hear where the pipe is "thumping."

Once we have marked where the pipe is running, we attach our Pressure Rig, also included in the Irrigation Kit. We inject alternating bursts of air and water into the pipe. The pressure of the air and water causes a boiling sound at the area of the leak. Following the area where the pipe runs, we listen along the line. As we get closer to the leak, the boiling sound becomes ever present and we listen for the loudest area of the sound. This accurately puts us over the leak and tells us where we will make repairs. As least invasively as possible, we can dig and repair with little damage and an easy repair job to fix the area of concrete above the line.
