From his family’s front yard in North Carolina, an 11-year-old kid built a homemade stand to sell cans of Pepsi-Cola.

He had such a knack for selling that he later dropped out of school and turned down a job offer from an up-and-coming snack company. But then, life took an unexpected turn, and he was forced to run back to the company and ask if the offer still stands. By the time he made it, it was too late.

Seeing the young man down and out but with a new car, the company asked if he’d help them out with something else. The young man didn’t think there was any future in what they were asking but took his chances.

Years later, that man turned out to be the founder of Lay's, and eventually, the chairman of PepsiCo. Through discovering how to preserve and ship chips so that they were fresh instead of stale, he turned Lay's into a household name with its chips being listed as the best in the U.S. And it all might have never happened if he had never bought a new car, at the perfect time.

This is the story of how Lay's went from being an undertaking with an uncertain outcome to one of the largest snack food companies in the world.
