Guitar players love to seek out riffs that allow them to target specific chords with scale tones. Some would argue that it’s just not possible to zero in on one single chord.
However, if done correctly, it can end up sounding pretty cool. I would agree that you cannot just isolate a single particular chord and then try using any old scale tones around it - that won’t offer you very much.
But saying that it’s impossible to influence one chord while incorporating a select few notes of the associated scale is simply not true.
I show you how to influence a riff in the middle region of the neck using a single chord. This riff is one that you can easily do with any chord and its associated scale tones.
For this lesson I’ve taken an open string “E” Minor chord in the middle of the neck and paired it with, “E” Minor scale tones.
To perform this riff, simply grab your favorite guitar, (I’ve chosen to go with a nylon-string acoustic), and start by learning the lessons “E” Minor chord shape.
Next, learn the lesson’s riff based around this chord from the notes of the “E” Minor Scale combined with the chords position as related to open strings.
Slowly work through the riff committing it to memory, (make sure to develop smooth use of the associated scale tones). Perform the riff in basic form, then add the bonus guitar lick as outlined in the revised version (see measure two).
